Letting Go of Your Teen: Mom Edition

It’s the moment every mother trains for and simultaneously dreads. The day your teen says, hey mom, can I have the keys? For a while, you can use the well-practiced excuse that they haven’t passed their driver’s test yet, or they can only go when you’re with them. It’s not that you don’t trust your child, mostly, at any rate, you just don’t trust the other driver’s out there to drive carefully and cautiously around your baby. Letting your baby bird fly the nest is not something you are really ready for just yet, I mean, there was supposed to be more time, but here we are. Driver’s test passed, and your baby wanting to take on the world.

Fortunately, you thought ahead for this moment when you were car shopping last month at Galles Chevrolet! You asked all the right questions, so now that the moment of truth has arrived, you and your 2018 Chevy Equinox are ready to let you super independent teen go. Well, a bit. Your 2018 Chevy Equinox is equipped with teen driver mode, which lets you set speed alerts, a volume limit and more; and with the industry’s first and only in-vehicle report card, it’s easy to track your teen’s driving performance. This way, even when you’re not in the car, you know your precious cargo is safe!

Teen Driver has a number of safety features, from muting audio until front seat occupants are buckled, to automatically turning on available active safety technologies like Side Blind Zone Alert, Forward Collision Alert, and Front Automatic Braking. The in-vehicle report card shows how your teen performs behind the wheel so you can identify potential problem areas and coach your new driver on improvements. Teen Driver is easy to set up. Just enter a PIN to access the Teen Driver menu through the available Chevrolet MyLink display and register a key. When your teen drives the vehicle with a registered key, Teen Driver enables various features, including Custom Alerts, Speed Limit, Audio Limit, and Distance Driven.

Not that I think my child is particularly wild and rebellious, but it’s nice to know that I don’t have to let go so suddenly. I can do it gradually, very gradually. No one wants to let go of their baby, and I am certainly no exception. Chevy’s Teen Driver mode gives me the peace of mind that my child with be safe while exploring their independence. But not TOO much independence. Not yet anyway. Baby steps.
