The Galles family has been an intricate part of transportation in New Mexico since Nicholas Galles arrived in the territory via the Santa Fe Trail and set up business as a wagon-maker in the mid 1800's. The family’s leading role in the state’s emerging automotive industry was cemented in 1908, when H.L. Galles, Sr., founded Galles Motor Company, eventually selling the first 11 cars in the New Mexico Territory, and laying the foundation for what is now the oldest and largest family automotive business in the State.

In 1933, Galles Motor Company purchased the Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Chevrolet franchises. With H.L. Galles Jr. at the helm, the company quickly grew as a major employer in New Mexico, with dealerships in Albuquerque, Silver City and Santa Fe – as well as in Portland and Phoenix. As the Chairman of Galles Motor Company until his death in 2007, H.L. Galles, Jr. was also a recognized force on the National Automotive Industry scene, and served as President of the National Auto Dealers Association in Washington, D.C.

More than 100 years after its inception, Galles Motor Company is a 5th Generation family business with Rick Galles at the helm as President and CEO. In addition to its flagship dealership, Galles Chevrolet, which remains New Mexico’s largest family owned and operated dealership, Galles Motor Company also lays claim to a 24-year history in professional motorsports. During this period, Rick Galles led his team to 21 Indy Car wins, an Indy Car World Series Championship in 1990 and an Indianapolis 500 win in 1992. The team’s driver roster has included Al Unser, Jr., Danny Sullivan, Bobby Rahal, Geoff Brabham, Davey Hamilton, Adrian Fernandez and many more.

In 2012, in recognition of leading his team to a historical 6 wins at the Long Beach Grand Prix, Rick was honored by his peers with an induction into the Long Beach Grand Prix Motorsports Hall of Fame. His medallion joined those of 14 previous inductees.

Rick has also been heavily involved in the real estate industry, founding Galles Properties in 2002, and as a competitor in the professional Cutting Horse industry, developing one of the largest Clinic programs in the country and hosting multiple professional NCHA events.

In addition to their business endeavors, the Galles Family is very active in the community. They are staunch supporters of the University Of New Mexico “Lobo” athletic program, the Carrie Tingley Hospital and the Galles “Friends of Youth” organization of Albuquerque.

Rick’s wife, Tina, their three children, and extended family are heavily involved in the day to day operations of Galles Motor Company.
